Enloe: What does the surname Enloe mean?
The last name 'Enloe' is of English origin. It is believed to have evolved from the name 'Enlow' or 'Henlow.' Both of these variations are toponymic surnames, meaning they are derived from a specific place, more specifically towns in England. ‘Henlow’ is a village in Bedfordshire, England, and it means 'high hill' in Old English. The transformation from Henlow or Enlow to Enloe likely happened as families moved across regions and continents, slightly changing the spelling and pronunciation of their surnames. As such, Enloe can mean 'from the high hill' signifying the family's geographic origin rather than a character trait or occupation. It is worth noting that the precise meaning of surnames can be difficult to determine due to these changes over time and variations in spelling. Often, the interpretations are based on etiological studies and archival records. Enloe is a somewhat uncommon name, with the most notable person being Cynthia Enloe, a feminist writer and retired professor.
Order DNA origin analysisEnloe: Where does the name Enloe come from?
The surname Enloe originates from England. It is derived from the Old English given name Eanflæd, composed of two elements: 'Ean' which means 'to show favor' or 'grace', and 'flæd' translates to 'fugitive' or 'former inhabitants of a place.' The surname thus means 'descendant of Eanflaed'. The name Eanflæd was common among the Anglo-Saxon ruling classes, which suggests it probably became a surname around the twelfth century after the Norman Conquest when surnames began to be used.
The Enloe surname records trace back to various English counties, including Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, and Nottinghamshire. It is thought that family members emigrated to America during the great migratory wave following the Norman Conquest.
In the U.S., the surname Enloe is relatively rare; the majority of those bearing the Enloe name are concentrated in the southern and midwestern states. Texas, Missouri, and North Carolina are among the states where the surname is most common today. The Enloe name is also found to a lesser extent in England, Canada, and Australia. This surname has a foothold in many parts of the world thanks to the emigrations over the centuries, but it remains a relatively infrequent name.
Variations of the surname Enloe
The surname Enloe may have originated from England and may be related to surnames of British or Anglo-Saxon origin. Different variants and spellings for Enloe can include Enlo, Enlow, Enlowe, Endloe, and Enlows. Few other variants are Enloes, Enloe's, Enlow's and Enlohe.
The surname Enloe might also have possibly derived from multiple given names, meaning it could either be a patronymic surname or a metronymic surname. In some cases, people have adopted this as a matronymic surname, meaning it is derived from the name of someone's mother or a female ancestor.
Research indicates that all these variants share a common ancestry dating back several centuries, and therefore are of the same origin. It's also common for the spelling of surnames to evolve over time, particularly where literacy was not widespread and names were written down based on their pronunciation.
However, not all people with these surnames may be related, as the variation in spelling could also result from adopting similar-sounding surnames by different families, independently of each other. In this case, comprehensive genealogical research would be necessary to confirm any close family connections.

I am wondering about the prevalence of this name in the Netherlands. My Dad and my brother's Y-DNA has lots of Enloes, and some variations, mostly American, but there are two with the same earliest ancestor from the Netherlands; 'Hendricks Enloes'. I'm just wondering about the direction of migration, since it is apparently, an Anglo-Saxon name?
Thanks!
