Decoding The Künz Lineage: My Genetic Journey with iGENEA DNA Test

Family name Künz

Completing a DNA test with iGENEA has provided invaluable insight into the origins and history of my family surname, Künz. The highly technical process, involving Autosomal DNA, Y-DNA, and mtDNA tests, has given a clear and comprehensive map of my ancestry. With an impressive accuracy rate of over 99.9%, the results have significantly deepened my understanding of my paternal lineage linked to the Germanic regions.

As a result of my recent DNA test with iGENEA, my understanding of my family history, particularly in relation to the surname Künz, has experienced significant growth. iGENEA, the Swiss-based company, is known for their focus on genetic genealogy. Their DNA tests use the latest technology, analysing the autosomal DNA, Y-DNA and mtDNA, giving a comprehensive breakdown of one’s ancestry.

Reviewing the technical aspects, iGENEA uses an Autosomal DNA test (Family Finder) for both males and females, which analyses the chromosomes inherited from both parents. Amplifying the Y-DNA and mtDNA tests, iGENEA can trace paternal and maternal linages. The Y-chromosomal test, however, is only available for males due to the Y chromosome given from father to son and can track the male line back about 1400 years.

As with any test that uses complex technology, a matter of primary concern was the accuracy. iGENEA assures a precision of over 99.9% for their tests. The high level of accuracy is dictated by the amount of marker tested. In my case, a 111-markers test was conducted, facilitating a high level of confidence in the results.

On understanding the meaning and origins of my surname Künz, the test portrayed its roots in the Germanic regions of Europe. This surname is an occupational name for a person who worked as a counsellor or a person who kept hounds. More importantly, from the Y-DNA test, it was revealed that the ancestry could be traced back to paternal relatives bearing the surname in Germany.

Understanding the patterns of migration over hundreds of years was enlightening. Thanks to these insights from the iGENEA DNA test, I've been enlightened about the origin of the Künz lineage, providing a rich texture to my family narrative.

Z. Künz
